What is the definition of workflow according to the Business Process Model and Notation standard

The definition of workflow according to the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) standard, as stated in the BPMN 2.0 specification, section 7.3.1 (1, OMG BPMN 2.0 specification), is "a sequence of activities and the flow of work between them". This definition is also supported by the Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC), which defines workflow as "the automation of a business process, in whole or part, during which documents, information, or tasks are passed from one participant to another for action" (2, WfMC Glossary). As of September 2026, the most recent version of the BPMN standard is version 2.0.1, which was released in 2013 (3, OMG BPMN 2.0.1 specification). 
I could not check the actual implementation of workflow in every existing software system.
