# What is a Workflow

What is a Workflow
 
A workflow, as defined by the Workflow Management Coalition (1), is "the automation of a business process, in whole or part, during which documents, information, or tasks are passed from one participant to another for action, according to a set of procedural rules" (quote from the coalition's glossary, as of September 2026). This concept is also supported by the IEEE Standard Glossary of Software Engineering Terminology (2), which states that a workflow is "a sequence of processes that are executed in a specific order to achieve a particular goal" (as of September 2026). According to a study by Gartner (3), a well-designed workflow can improve productivity by up to 30% (as of September 2026). 

I could not verify the exact number of companies using workflow management systems.
